Based on the Anne McCaffrey book of the same title here we see the dragons burning up the alien threads that periodically threaten life on the planet in conjunction with their almost symbiotic human riders. The image size is 196 x 394 mm and mounted in 60mm mount to an overall size of 545 x 345 mm which leaves a border where it is signed by Linda Garland and numbered over 990. Printed on 350gsm acid-free board using light-fast inks. The picture is credited to Linda but was something of a joint effort as her husband did some work on it too - the marbling on the threads mainly, if memory serves.

This is an extremely rare collectible. We obtained these from the Garland family several years ago. These 220 x 320 mm sheets of small stickers of details of some of their best-loved images was part of their first foray into making jewelry. The stickers were put onto earrings and pendants and then sealed with a clear varnish. There are enough here with well over 70 stickers to make yourself loads of celtic earrings and pendants! In the end though, the family decided it was too much work on top of all their other commitments so they opted for getting a local craftsman to produce pewter jewelry based on their designs instead. We doubt there are many more than the four sheets we have in existence nowadays so they might well be worth keeping just as they are as a collectible item in themselves.

The Nightmare is a manifestation of the Welsh goddess Rhiannon,a horse goddess who can change her shape at will. She is to be found in the epic Welsh poem The Mabinogion. She is the muse of poetry and as the Welsh are particularly adept at this art form, according to her only the best should attempt it. Her nest is in the bowl of a large Yew tree and she is surrounded by her nine handmaidens (all horses). The bones of the poets who dared to aspire to greatness and were found wanting are to be found at the base of the tree.

I had the great good fortune to be around when Linda was working on this painting. It is her wonderful combination of brilliant painting and innovative use of collage that makes it so stunning. Even if you're not amazingly impressed by this small digital image you just wait till you see the fine-art Limited Edition when it arrives.
