Another beautiful Ian Daniels watercolour. This was a private commission for Ian Daniels and a celtic - inspired piece. The image size is 294 x 461 mm and beautifully double mounted in complementary colours to an overall size of 440 x 615 mm not including the lovely gold-inlaid walnut frame. On the back is a small piece with a reproduced detail produced by the artist Ian Daniels himself that tells you about the image,'The horn of the unicorn (the alicorn) was considered to detect and protect from poisons. The unicorn which lived in forests and meadows was believed to be so swift that no-one could catch it, and that it would only come willingly to a young maiden. Many cultures believed thatthe unicorn was symbol of the moon being both gentle and wise.' On the back is a small piece with a reproduced detail produced by the artist Ian Daniels himself that tells you about the image,'The goddess under the title lupa or Feronia was calld the great She-Wolf in early Rome. The Lupercalia (festival of the She wolf), honoring her, lasted well into later Roman times. The Romans considered this aspect of the goddess to be the mother of their ancestors, the foster mother of Romulus and Remus.' The Bird symbolises heaven and the whole picture symbolises the search for enlightenment as does the whole tale from which the title is taken.
